A Petition to Unblock CourseTable

Yale has blocked CourseTable. Many of us lost access to our worksheets in the middle of a busy day of course shopping. We love Yale for its courses, and appreciate a better way to find the best ones for each of us. (For more information, see our site and the Yale Daily News article and op-ed.)

Please unblock CourseTable:

And let it return to its original state, to once again embrace the Yale values of innovation, creativity, and respect for its students.

— Peter Xu and Harry Yu

I think that Yale has handled this situation poorly. Although I may not agree with Yale's final decision, I, and many other students, would appreciate a public announcement as to why CourseTable (previously Yale Blue Book Plus) was taken down. Rather than relying on secret action and vague reasoning, the university should clearly offer their argument to the student body. With Yale acting in such a sudden and unexpected way, the decision comes off as unfair. Uncertainty about what students are allowed to do will not flourish innovation. Be clear, Yale and let your arguments be known. If the arguments are too weak to be shared publicly then there's an issue.

Yale is supposedly an institution that values academic freedom (e.g. President Salovey's remarks on the ASA's boycott of Israel), I find this move very concerning. The least they could have done was make a statement, but they haven't done even that. Personally, I had my shopping schedule set (science major woo), but the anger over this move is completely justified for my less fortunate classmates. Yale, I expected better of you. I am most disappointed with this move and the administration's silence about it.

Bluebook Plus (CourseTable) was a really helpful resource that I thought was fantastic and definitely helped me navigate the first two shopping periods I had. When I saw that it was blocked I thought it was a joke for the longest time, because it seemed like such a boon for the students and the university - it showcased the investment students had in their school, showed-off the tech and entrepreneurship that Yale is trying to increase, and it just made everything easier without Yale having to spend a dime. Also, it was really popular with students and the backlash that would come with a blocking of it must have been obvious. Surely Yale sees all of the positives and will allow the site to re-open. Surely Yale is not just a corporation that abides by bylaws and regulation. At least, I hope, if Yale wants to continue to be an important institution. It just makes us look a little bit silly next to our peers, who openly encourage these kinds of creative endeavors.

If Yale does not want data to be known, it should not publish it in the first place. But more importantly, implementing its own variation of the Great Firewall of China to block access to something its own students devised sends a terrible signal about both innovation and free communication.

Even though I'm studying abroad in the UK right now, I was especially ashamed to hear on Facebook and the Washington Post of Yale's decision to block Harry Yu's and Peter Xu's CourseTable. Harry and Peter have devoted hundreds and hundreds of hours making a tool that benefits all Yale undergraduates, only to have it completely destroyed by a cohort of Yale administrators too afraid of technological innovation by its own outstanding students. Such a shame!

The censorship event that has transpired weakens my faith in whatever commitment to innovation Yale may purport to have. This embarrassing mismanagement undermines the purported efforts of the SEAS and CS departments to attract top talent to our university, and will only drive potential students away from Yale and towards institutions more meaningfully supportive of student creativity, passion, and innovation.

Yale's action against Course Table renders obsolete good-faith student engagement with the course evaluations process, and perpetuates poor instruction. Course Table required the same CAS-credentials for login, and in no way violated the Yale trademark or any copyrightable Yale-authored content: ratings data are authored by students, not the University, and students have never ceded ownership to their evaluations, merely giving Yale the right to reproduce them. The site claimed no ownership of the Yale brand, only seeking to signal its relevance to the Yale community. Bad teachers are the only ones standing to gain from this policy.

The administration ought to feel proud that, once again, Yale students have been able to provide a service that outshines every resource Yale has provided in the area of course selection (using the data that the University already requires we provide and that it already presents to us for the purpose of understanding and comparing courses). Instead, this petty action reeks of embarrassment over wasted millions on inadequate services and of the preference to protect poorly-performing instructors rather than to make necessary changes, and for it the administration should be ashamed, if the rejection of net neutrality as an ISP is not shameful enough.

I'm very disappointed with Yale's handling of its objections to CourseTable. It is in the first place very disconcerting that Yale would stifle and restrict such a brilliant and useful start-up project that only reorganizes already-public information. Yale understands that it must move forward in its Computer Science department and opportunities for programmers, since it is falling behind many peer institutions, yet one of the best projects relating to these fields is being stifled. Second, I think it highly inappropriate, irresponsible, and unfair to demand students complete evaluations of their courses and then not allow students to utilize those evaluations effectively.

I won't pretend to know why this decision was made, but by making it, Yale discourages students--legal, independent, adult students--from trying to take charge of their own learning. Some people are better teachers than other people, and some classes are a better use of 100 hours than other classes. To deny this doesn't make it less true.
Tapley Stephenson, 2014
Jan 15, 3:55 PM
This was a poor decision by Yale. Not only did it limit students' access to information about classes, but it struck down a well made, student-designed site. This has negative implications for both shopping period and startup culture at Yale. I question whether this would happen at Harvard or Stanford.

As students and ordinary people we are entitled to voice and share our opinions regarding courses and professors to the maximum extent allowed by the law. Yale could suggest where and how we say it, but should not in any means determine where and how we must. As an Internet Service Provider, Yale tramps the principle of Internet neutrality; as an educational institution, it casts shadows on its Lux and Veritas.

If it's a data protection issue due to facebook integration or something of the like, at least let students see the course names and numbers that they have saved on their bluebook plus accounts. A full-site shutdown seems to be a one-sided decision made in haste, and one that has been handled quite poorly on behalf of the administration.

Yale should be encouraging innovation by its students, not stifling it. The university's response to this issue reflects a dangerously antiquated view of intellectual property rights. Open data and creative visualizations are the future, and Yale needs to get onboard now.

Yale is acting like a clown ass...some professors and courses are simply bad, and students deserve an easy way to distinguish between them. Instead of problematizing the exposure of the truth, Yale needs to handle the truth--by making bad classes better, and by demanding better results out of poor professors. Also, Yale has handled this entire situation poorly, and this speaks to the way the administration engages with the student body as a whole.

Yale is supposedly trying to craft the future entrepreneurs and leaders of tomorrow. Here are two students who are in the midst of of doing that, yet Yale is locking them down. These students are doing this free of charge, improving the site better than whoever Yale paid to do the original bluebooking site, yet for some inexplicable reason Yale decided to stop that dead in its tracks. The students have spoken and Yale should quit its corporate bullshit and invite this entrepreneurship that's for the benefit of both students and the university.

I've been using Course Table since it first came out last year, and it has been incredibly helpful in introducing me to classes I was otherwise unaware of. Losing my schedule the Monday classes started has been inconvenient, to say the least, and while Peter and Harry have been very helpful in emailing everyone a copy of their schedule, I spent most of that day going off of memory. Yale often tells us a significant part of our education comes from interacting with and the work of our peers. It would be a pity if no incoming students could have the benefit of this great resource.

I felt waves of nausea at the sight of CourseTable's elegant interface being replaced with an Orwellian "Web Page Blocked" screen. I thought Yale was above this, apparently I was mistaken. Their lack of transparency, their attempt to strong-arm innovators by surreptitiously bringing down their innovations, and their complete and ominous silence constitutes more "malicious activity" then a useful website to help students chose courses.

Why do we evaluate courses at all if Yale is in the business of making sure we can't easily use those evaluations to make educated decisions?

I only used Bluebook+ (CourseTable). It's both better organized and easier to use than the university's Bluebook. Yale should not be in the business of shutting down successful and innovative ideas.

This information is already freely available on OCI and OCS and YaleBluebook. The Yale Administration must just be jealous that two students created something that IS FAR SUPERIOR to any of the multi-million dollar solutions the University has come up with.

CourseTable (BluebookPlus) is an important tool for Yale students to help them maximize their shopping week opportunities to find the perfect classes for them per semester. The feedback provided by students regarding their overall experience in a class is immeasurably helpful to other students looking to take the same course. Bring this website back.

CourseTable has a very easy and clear interface to read. It organizes schedules way better than Bluebook and it provides much more valuable information in an easy to access format. If this really is about protecting lowly rated teachers, just get better teachers then! Some classes all have abysmally rated professors and that is important to know. Get better professors and restructure the class so it promote a more fulfilling learning institution.

Please unblock CourseTable. All this website, which has been around for a year now, ever did was use information provided by the University - information that was all public to us anyway - to make life easier for students. It makes little sense to punish students for wanting to help others out, and it makes even less sense to do it at the start of shopping period, when the action was most likely to hurt students. If Yale wants to create an environment that is not hostile to technological innovation, or even just have more informed students, this censorship should end.

The worst thing about this whole farce is the fact that other websites that have not involved your evaluation comparison feature but have drawn data from the same source have received administrative support. That greatly weakens the registrar's claim that copyright is a key issue. It is interesting that Mary Miller is scheduled to speak at the YPU later this term. I wonder if she will have the courage to defend this decision in debate. If not, I would question whether an institution dedicated to free speech ought give a platform to someone who seems keen to suppress it.
